The United States will host a further G20 meeting to discuss the impact of war on food and fertilizer.
In the coming weeks, the United States will host further discussions within the G20 on the impact of the Middle East war on food and fertilizer, continuing to push for coordinated action among nations. As the current chair of the G20, the United States will make this commitment in a chair's statement. The statement involves the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting during the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings on April 16. Media outlets had seen a draft of the statement before its official release later on Monday evening. The statement indicates that G20 finance officials discussed a range of issues, including the economic impact of the war and its effects on agricultural markets, value chains, and fertilizers, but did not announce an agreement on coordinated action to ensure fertilizer supply during supply disruptions caused by the war. Last week, US Treasury Secretary Yellen initiated a call for G20 member countries to work together with the IMF and the World Bank to ensure countries have access to much-needed fertilizers. According to two senior officials familiar with the matter, most G20 member countries support this US-led initiative, but a few countries were unable to confirm whether they would take action before the weekend. Officials stated that discussions at the working level will continue in order to reach a "doable consensus."
