On April 18, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held talks in Barcelona, Spain. This is the first visit of a Mexican President to Spain in eight years, signaling a gradual easing of the previously tense relationship between the two countries. This visit is also seen as an important step in restarting political dialogue between Mexico and Spain after many years. The relationship between Mexico and Spain deteriorated during the presidency of former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. In 2019, Lopez publicly wrote to Spanish King Felipe VI, requesting an apology for the oppression of indigenous people in Mexico during the colonial period. However, this request was rejected by the Spanish authorities at that time. This incident led to Lopez not formally visiting Spain during his term in office.
