In the first quarter of this year, the General Administration of Customs, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, issued bans on major animal epidemics such as foot-and-mouth disease and highly pathogenic avian influenza from 8 countries. Customs nationwide detected 12,000 instances of animal diseases and quarantine pests at ports, an increase of 15.6% year-on-year, and seized 1163 batches of alien species, a 5.9% increase. They also returned or destroyed 394 batches of imported agricultural products that did not meet standards, suspended the qualifications of 169 foreign agricultural product companies from exporting to China, effectively preventing the spread of animal and plant epidemics and the invasion of alien species.
