American and British officials are concerned that AI will expose vulnerabilities in the financial industry.
Anthropic has released a preview version of its AI model, Mythos, and recently the US government called for an emergency meeting with a group of bank executives to discuss related issues. Anthropic claims that the Mythos model can identify and exploit vulnerabilities in "all mainstream operating systems and all mainstream web browsers" at a speed and scale significantly greater than traditional manual processes. Due to concerns about cybersecurity issues, the company has not widely promoted this model. Insiders say that after the model was released, US Treasury Secretary Benson and Federal Reserve Chairman Powell quickly convened emergency meetings with executives from US banks, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and other banks to ensure that each bank understands the risks that the Mythos model and similar models may bring in the future, and to take measures to protect their own systems. In addition, there are reports that the banking industry in the UK is also closely monitoring the Mythos model, with the Bank of England planning to discuss related issues with the Treasury and other agencies at an upcoming meeting.
