According to the local civil defense department, a stampede occurred in the rural areas of northern Haiti on April 11, local time, causing at least 30 deaths. The death toll may still rise. The head of the civil defense department in the northern province of Haiti stated that the stampede occurred at Laferrire Citadel. This fortress, built in the early 19th century shortly after Haiti gained independence from France, is one of Haiti's most popular tourist attractions. On the day of the incident, the fortress was crowded with students and visitors who had come to participate in the annual celebration of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
