The Japanese government has approved an additional subsidy of 631.5 billion yen (approximately 4 billion US dollars) to accelerate Rapidus company's entry into the competitive field of artificial intelligence chip manufacturing. This funding is aimed at supporting Rapidus in conducting business for IT company Fujitsu. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan stated on Saturday that the additional funds bring the total cost and investment injected by the government into this startup company for the current fiscal year (ending in March 2027) to 2.6 trillion yen (approximately 16.3 billion US dollars). The department mentioned that an external committee has conducted an inspection of Rapidus' wafer factory in northern Hokkaido, Japan, and has recognized its technological progress. This recently established chip manufacturer began developing wafers using 2 nanometer technology last year, with the goal of mass-producing cutting-edge semiconductor technology by 2027 and helping Japan reduce its dependence on industry-leading companies like TSMC.
