On the 8th, during an interview with the American Broadcasting Company, President Trump stated that the United States may seek to establish a "joint venture mechanism" with Iran to jointly "operate" the Strait of Hormuz. When asked by reporters whether Iran would be allowed to charge a toll for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump replied, "We are considering operating in a joint venture manner. This is a method to ensure the safety of navigation and prevent interference from many others. This is a wonderful thing." Trump also said that he would not allow Iran to engage in uranium enrichment activities, and that the US military stationed in the Middle East would not withdraw. He hinted that the military would continue to stay in the region to ensure that any future agreements reached are implemented. Trump said that he expected peace talks with Iran to begin on the 10th and progress rapidly. Earlier in the day on the 8th, Trump tweeted on social media that the United States would help address the "shipping congestion" issue in the Strait of Hormuz, and that "there will be many positive actions, huge wealth will be created."
