Office of Taiwan Affairs of the State Council: Cross-strait affairs are the family affairs of compatriots on both sides.
On April 8th, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. When asked about the visit of Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Zheng Liwen to mainland China, the spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office had previously stated that cross-strait matters are family matters and should be discussed and handled by family members. In response, the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council stated that the mainland's statement highlights its intent of "anti-interference" and "internalization of cross-strait issues". What are your comments on this?
Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian responded by saying that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, and are all Chinese people and one family. Cross-strait matters are the family affairs of compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and should be discussed and handled by family members. Cross-strait compatriots have sufficient wisdom and ability to solve their own problems. We are willing to work with Taiwan political parties and individuals, including the Kuomintang, on the common political basis of upholding the "1992 Consensus" and opposing "Taiwan independence", to promote peaceful development of cross-strait relations, seek peace in the Taiwan Strait, prosperity for compatriots, and rejuvenation of the nation. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities pursue "Taiwan independence" for personal gain, which is dishonest and unacceptable.
