Delta Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will increase checked baggage fees on domestic and some short-haul international routes to offset the skyrocketing aviation fuel costs due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. This increase marks the first time in two years that Delta has raised domestic baggage fees, and competitors United Airlines and JetBlue have also taken similar actions. Airlines around the world are struggling to cope with significantly higher fuel prices, as tensions in the Middle East disrupt important oil transport routes like the Strait of Hormuz, driving up operating costs and squeezing profit margins. According to data from the International Air Transport Association, the average global aviation fuel price was around $85 to $90 per barrel in February before the US-Iran conflict, but has now surged to around $209 per barrel. Delta Airlines stated that fees for the first and second checked bags booked on or after Wednesday will each increase by $10, while the fee for the third checked bag will increase by $50.
