Europe plans to launch a digital euro in 2029.
According to the website of "El Espaol" newspaper on April 4, the European Central Bank plans to decide within the year whether to finally launch the controversial digital euro. This project aims to promote the digitization of currency transactions among European citizens and improve transaction convenience. The European Central Bank stated: "The digital euro will complement cash, incorporating the core advantages of 'easy operation, privacy protection, security, reliability, and universal use in the euro area' into digital payment scenarios." However, in reality, this project has raised concerns among some economists and industry experts, who point out that the digital euro may impact the privacy and security of citizens. If the project is approved, the European Central Bank will launch a pilot operation in 2027, preparing for the official issuance of the digital euro in 2029. At that time, in payment scenarios such as merchants, restaurants, and various online platforms, in addition to cash and credit cards, the payment option of the digital euro will be added.
