The cooling system of Unit 1 fuel pool at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan has stopped operating.
According to a statement from Tokyo Electric Power Company on the evening of the 5th, the fuel pool of Unit 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant stopped operating due to a water pump malfunction in the afternoon of the same day. Currently, there have been no reports of radiation leakage or casualties. Tokyo Electric Power Company stated that at around 2:45 p.m. local time on the 5th, an alarm sounded for the water pump malfunction, and smoke was observed at the site. After the water pump malfunctioned, the cooling system stopped operating. According to the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the water temperature was 26.5 degrees Celsius when the cooling system stopped, with about 8 days of buffer time before reaching the upper limit of 65 degrees Celsius. Tokyo Electric Power Company is currently investigating the cause of the malfunction, speeding up the repair of the water pump to restore the operation of the cooling system.
