The finance ministers of the European Union's five countries are calling for imposing windfall taxes on energy companies.

According to a letter from five EU finance ministers jointly addressed to the European Commission, the finance ministers have called for a tax on energy companies' windfall profits to address the fuel price increase resulting from the Iran conflict. The finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria issued this call in a joint letter dated on Friday, stating that this action would demonstrate "our unity and ability to take action". They wrote in the letter, "This will also send a clear message that those benefiting from the consequences of war must do their part to ease the burden on the public."
