Analyst: Microsoft's cutting-edge AI model goals reflect its competitive positioning.
TD Cowen analysts wrote in a report that during an interview with Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman on X, he outlined Microsoft's goal to release a new cutting-edge artificial intelligence model by 2027, representing a significant strategic shift. These analysts wrote that most investors did not seem to anticipate the company's full commitment to cutting-edge research, but as tech companies invest in model research and AI labs hope to enter the enterprise software field, this move is reasonable in a broader "coopetition" context. These analysts wrote: "By owning their own cutting-edge model, Microsoft will reduce their dependence on these large language model partners and have full control of the AI intelligence layer, positioning themselves more competitively to counter Google's AI labs and Gemini vertical integration technology stack."
