On April 2nd, President Trump announced through social media that he will "soon" sign an executive order to pay the Department of Homeland Security employees who are not receiving their salaries due to the government shutdown. Because of the contradictions between the Democratic and Republican parties on the funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, the department has not received regular appropriations since mid-February, leading to a shutdown lasting over 40 days. However, according to reports from NBC News, employees of agencies under the Department of Homeland Security, such as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, have received their salaries under the "big and beautiful" tax cuts and spending law passed in July of last year. However, thousands of essential personnel within the Department of Homeland Security, including civilian Coast Guard personnel, employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, have been working without pay during the shutdown. In an effort to alleviate the chaos at airports caused by the absence of security personnel due to the lack of pay, Trump ordered the payment of salaries to Transportation Security Administration employees on March 27th. This payment was issued this week. On April 2nd, Trump stated, "Help is on the way." The White House has not disclosed where the funds for these payments are coming from.
