Due to the disruption of Middle East supplies by the Iran War, Canada's largest refinery has turned to Newfoundland for the first time since 2020 to seek crude oil. Irving Oil has been granted permission to use foreign tankers to transport crude oil from the Whiffen Head terminal in Newfoundland and Labrador to its refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick. This refinery is the only one in Canada that relies on Persian Gulf crude oil. Due to the impact of the US-Iran war, the supply of this key shipping route through the Hormuz Strait has been cut off.
