Wang Yi had a phone call with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi spoke by phone with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the 2nd, exchanging views on the situation in the Middle East. Maas stated that the current situation in Iran is severe and complex, causing serious impacts on global economy, energy, and food security. Ending the conflict as soon as possible is in the common interest of the international community. Germany supports the United Nations in playing its proper role, values the five-point initiative proposed by China and Pakistan for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East regions, and is willing to continue communication and cooperation with China. Wang Yi explained China's principled position, stating that the U.S.'s military attack on Iran without authorization from the UN Security Council is a clear violation of international law. The sovereignty and security of Gulf countries should be respected, civilians and non-military targets must be protected, and maritime security, as well as energy and infrastructure, should also be ensured. As responsible major countries, China and Germany should uphold an objective and impartial stance, play a constructive role, and promote the swift cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace and stability in the region. The two sides also exchanged views on China-Germany relations and agreed to implement the outcomes of Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to China, enhance strategic communication, deepen strategic mutual trust, and promote greater development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany.
