The Trump administration reportedly plans to impose tariffs on some pharmaceutical companies.
Insiders revealed that the Trump administration is expected to announce as early as Thursday that pharmaceutical companies that do not reach agreements to ensure low drug prices in the United States will be subject to tariffs. This will be the latest measure to impose tariffs on imported goods on the grounds of national security. Over the past year, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of 100% to 200% on the pharmaceutical industry to force drug companies to move production back to the United States and lower drug prices for American patients. Most pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer and Eli Lilly have reached agreements with the White House to exempt such tariffs for three years. The new tariffs stem from an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. Insiders stated that companies that have not reached agreements with the government and have not negotiated will face a 100% tariff. As the information has not been made public yet, insiders requested anonymity. They stated that the plan has not been finalized and may still change. They also mentioned that some drugs and disease categories may also be exempted.
