The "2026 Global Africa Tech Expo" opened in the Algerian capital, Algiers, on the 28th, focusing on promoting the development of digital infrastructure in Africa and advancing African technological sovereignty. Amandip Singh Gill, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technology, stated in his opening speech that African countries should work together to establish their own rules for artificial intelligence. The African continent should not only follow global trends, but also cultivate its own experts and systems to ensure that technology benefits everyone fairly. Algerian President Tebboune expressed in his letter that developing the telecommunications industry has become a critical strategic issue affecting the economic and social progress of the African continent. He called for narrowing the digital divide, protecting data sovereignty, urging African countries to control the flow of data, autonomously develop services, and create added value within their own borders. The expo attracted over 5,000 participants from dozens of countries, engaging in discussions on artificial intelligence, blockchain, smart cities, and other fields. The event will continue until the 30th.
