Wang Xing: We will strive to upgrade the Meituan App to become the first AI-powered App.
"We view AI as a strategic opportunity to improve, strengthen, and even completely revolutionize our core business products and operations in local daily life... We will strive to upgrade the Meituan App into an AI-powered App, better meeting consumers' end-to-end experience in local daily life and instant retail."
During the Meituan financial report conference call on March 26th, CEO Wang Xing stated that in the AI revolution, the only reasonable strategy is to attack, not to defend. However, Meituan will not blindly pursue becoming a "word factory," but instead sees AI as a strategic opportunity to enhance consumers' real-world service experiences. He revealed that since early 2023, Meituan has made significant investments in capital expenditures and AI talent, "aside from enterprises with cloud computing businesses, Meituan's investment in AI is likely the largest among domestic enterprises, and has been consistently focusing on it for over three years." Meituan continues to invest in its self-developed large-scale model LongCat, as well as collaborating with top third-party large-scale models in the industry, aiming to accurately understand the real physical world. Wang Xing believes that the key to AI's "super entrance" lies in accurately understanding user needs and efficiently executing tasks, with complexity far beyond "chatbots." Especially in the field of local daily life, where consumer scenarios are diverse and numerous, and mass merchant information is scattered, data and information are not efficiently digitized. Furthermore, local life platforms also need to deeply manage fulfillment delivery, a capability that general AI lacks.
Based on years of business development, Meituan has accumulated a wealth of information in the physical world and gathered the most comprehensive user real evaluations on the entire network. Currently, Meituan has opened up its AI assistant "Xiaotuan" embedded in the Meituan App to all users, covering all categories of Meituan's local life. Users only need to enter their service needs to quickly match high-quality merchants and products. Wang Xing gave an example: "I work in Wangjing and my friend is in Zhongguancun. We plan to have lunch together, but we only have 2 hours and need to find a Sichuan restaurant in a central area with good taste and convenient parking." To meet this common demand, AI needs to have access to map information, POI information, and real-time supply information of restaurants; otherwise, it is difficult to meet users' actual needs. With a vast amount of information from the physical world, "Xiaotuan" can quickly extract valuable information from all network evaluations and infer answers that meet users' personalized needs. Wang Xing stated that in the future, model capabilities will continue to be optimized, and Meituan will further integrate "Xiaotuan" into the Meituan App. "We hope to use the new generation of AI technology to make the Meituan App the preferred platform for users to solve local life needs. We will strengthen AI search capabilities, enhance execution capabilities, and strive to upgrade the Meituan App into an AI-powered App, becoming the AI entrance for future local life needs."
