UN special envoy: Dialogue and easing tensions are the key to a ceasefire between the conflicting parties in Sudan.
United Nations Special Envoy for Sudan Peke Havisto, who is currently visiting Sudan, stated on the 25th that dialogue and de-escalation are key to achieving a comprehensive cessation of hostilities by all parties in the Sudan conflict. The United Nations supports all efforts aimed at promoting a ceasefire and achieving a lasting peace in Sudan. According to a statement from the Sudan Sovereignty Council, Chairman and Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Burhan held talks with Havisto in the capital, Khartoum, on the current situation in Sudan and efforts for stability and peace. At a press conference following the talks, Havisto emphasized the need to prioritize measures to protect civilians, actively explore effective pathways to build trust, and create conditions for substantial progress towards a political resolution of the conflict. The United Nations will continue to closely collaborate with all parties, provide humanitarian assistance to Sudan, promote peace and stability in the country, and pave the way for lasting peace through sincere and inclusive dialogue. Havisto took over as the United Nations Special Envoy for Sudan in February this year, succeeding Ramdan Ramamra. On April 15, 2023, armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum, spreading to other regions afterwards. The armed conflict, which has been ongoing for nearly three years, has resulted in a large number of civilian casualties.
