According to Semafor, JetBlue Airways is evaluating the possibility of selling itself to a competitor and has hired consultants to analyze the regulatory prospects of merging with United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. After its acquisition of Spirit Airlines was rejected on antitrust grounds in 2024, its stock price plummeted over 40% and the company fell into financial difficulties. Currently, the merger plan is still in the preliminary stages and it is not certain whether it will proceed. JetBlue stated that it will focus on its own transformation strategy. United Airlines has long been interested in acquiring JetBlue but is concerned about the impact on its credit rating; the two companies already have a partnership that allows for ticket booking and points interchangeability. United Airlines' CFO believes that the industry's merger environment is favorable and is expected to witness consolidation.
