Indonesia will increase coal production and impose export taxes.
Due to the Iran war causing chaos in the global energy market, coal prices have surged significantly, prompting Indonesia to allow miners to increase coal production. Indonesian Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said on Thursday that, given the escalating conflict in the Middle East region, the government will raise production quotas for coal miners. He also mentioned that the government is studying the imposition of export taxes on this fossil fuel to increase national revenue. As the world's largest coal exporter, this move indicates that the government is increasingly taking action to tackle the volatile energy market, contrasting with previous policies that limited production to support prices. With countries increasing the use of coal for power generation as a substitute for natural gas, demand is expected to rise.
