Trump exempts Jones Act to suppress oil prices.
President Trump has issued a short-term waiver for the Jones Act in an effort to curb the continuously rising global energy prices and to facilitate the transportation of oil and natural gas. The Jones Act is a federal regulation that requires vessels transporting goods between U.S. ports to fly the U.S. flag, be owned by U.S. citizens, and be crewed by U.S. sailors. In recent years, the act has been waived during natural disasters such as hurricanes. White House press secretary Levi stated in a statement, "As U.S. military continues to execute the operational goals of 'Epic Fury', President Trump has decided to issue a 60-day waiver for the Jones Act, as another step to mitigate short-term disruptions in the oil market." She also said, "This move will allow critical resources such as oil, natural gas, fertilizers, and coal to freely flow into U.S. ports for 60 days, and this administration remains committed to strengthening our key supply chains."
