According to a data center expansion strategy plan announced by the German government on the 17th, by 2030, the computing power of general data centers in Germany will at least double from the 2025 level, with the computing power specifically for artificial intelligence increasing by at least four times from the 2025 level. German Minister of Digitalization and Modernization Kasten Vierbger told the media that this strategy aims to meet the rapidly growing data processing demands due to AI applications, cloud services, and digitalization processes. "From a global perspective, we clearly still have a lot of catching up to do," Vierbger said. The strategy document to be submitted for approval by the German cabinet proposes a total of 28 specific measures, with the core goal of promoting Germany to become a leading data center hub in Europe with data sovereignty. According to German media reports, the measures cover several key areas, including reforming the data center tax system, adjusting the right to collect business taxes from the location of the operating company to the actual location of the data center; simplifying the planning and approval process for new data centers and finding suitable plots of land for investors; and pushing for data centers to be powered by 100% renewable energy as soon as possible. The strategy document also suggests that the addition of data center capacity should be primarily constructed by German and European companies to reduce Germany's dependence on large cloud service providers outside of Europe such as Amazon's cloud computing service platform.
