The world's largest bauxite producer is planning to restrict supply to support prices.
Guinea, the world's largest bauxite producer, is in discussions with mining companies to control the supply of ore in the market to protect the country from the impact of falling prices. The Minister of Mines and Geology of the country, Buena Sira, stated, "This policy is aimed at regulating bauxite production to prevent price drops, thus avoiding a decrease in business income and government revenue." He said that the government had discussions with the mining industry association on March 12 on this issue. Bauxite prices have almost halved since early 2025. Guinea's exports surged by more than a quarter last year, reaching 183 million tons. Sira stated that Guinea is urging mining companies not to exceed the production levels set in their mining plans and government agreements. "This decision will take effect in the coming weeks, with the aim of ensuring that production and exports in 2026 remain consistent with the levels set in the feasibility study." Sira also said, "We are not looking to ban exports, but rather to regulate the production and export of bauxite." Guinea also hopes that more bauxite will be processed into alumina domestically.
