Various chicken feet sold in the market are mostly white in color, plump in texture, and appetizing at first sight. However, there is one detail that has caught the attention of journalists, and that is the price of chicken feet products. A 500-gram portion of chicken feet is often sold for as low as 15 yuan. Behind the trendy chicken feet products on the market, are they really as clean and safe as they appear on the outside? With doubts in mind, journalists from the #315 Evening News investigated the booming chicken feet sales in the Sichuan and Chongqing region. They found that in Chengdu, in the production workshop of Mingyang Food, which is the place where Shufuxiang Food Co., Ltd. processes their chicken feet products, there was no health certificate issued, no health examinations conducted, and no hygiene disinfection. The journalists easily entered the workshop and were exposed to a foul smell in the processing area, trimming area, and sorting area. The production environment was filthy: the floor was covered in murky water, plastic baskets were randomly piled up, and production machinery was stained with thick dirt and oil. In this workshop, a large number of chicken feet were directly exposed and piled on the damp and dirty floor, while cleaning tools like brooms and shovels were carelessly placed on top of the chicken feet. Even if the chicken feet were stepped on, the workers would simply pick them up and put them back into processing baskets without regard for food hygiene and safety. As the investigation deepened, a key piece of information was revealed - despite the dirty environment, the end product of chicken feet was always white and tempting, all because the factory carried out a key "bleaching" process. The staff revealed: "It is bleached with hydrogen peroxide." Hydrogen peroxide, also known as oxygenated water, is often used as a strong oxidant and disinfectant for sterilization. According to national regulations, hydrogen peroxide should not be used in the processing of chicken feet, as this chemical can destroy the nutritional components such as protein in the food. Consuming food soaked in hydrogen peroxide for a long time can result in damage to oral mucosa, liver, kidney, and other health hazards. Overdosing on it can even be life-threatening.
