Two foreign oil tankers were attacked in the territorial waters of Iraq, resulting in one fatality.
On the morning of the 12th local time, officials at a port in southern Iraq reported that two foreign oil tankers were attacked and caught fire in Iraqi territorial waters. The attack took place at the Um Qasr port, located on the west coast of the Zubair Bay, about 50 kilometers south of the port city of Basra in southern Iraq. Preliminary investigations indicate that a speedboat carrying explosives launched the attack on the oil tankers. Saad Maan, the head of the security media center under the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, issued a statement early on the 12th confirming that the attack resulted in one fatality, with 38 crew members rescued. The statement also mentioned that the Iraqi government has deployed six ships to rescue the attacked crew members, and search and rescue efforts for the missing individuals are ongoing.
