The Pentagon integrates Google AI agents to automate non-classified daily work.
A senior official from the US Department of Defense stated that Google is deploying artificial intelligence agents for about 3 million Department of Defense personnel to automate daily tasks. Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael said that Google's Gemini AI agents can independently execute tasks set by users, initially running on non-classified networks. He added that the Department of Defense is in discussions with Google to deploy these agents on classified cloud platforms. Google Vice President Jim Kelly stated in a blog post on Tuesday that this new feature will allow civilian and military personnel at the Department of Defense to build AI agents using natural language. Google has faced internal criticism in the past for its collaboration with the Department of Defense. In 2018, thousands of employees protested the company's involvement in Project Maven, a Pentagon plan to use AI to analyze data from overseas drone warfare videos. The backlash ultimately led to Google not renewing the contract for that project.
