The Swiss government announced on Friday its plan to only purchase about 30 F-35 fighter jets from US company Lockheed Martin and is considering buying European-made air defense systems to make up for delays in existing procurement plans. This decision comes after disputes with the US over the price of the aircraft, as well as the US decision to postpone the delivery of Patriot air defense systems to Switzerland. There were disagreements between Switzerland and the US on whether a fixed price of 6 billion Swiss francs (approximately $7.7 billion) was set when the initial plan was to purchase 36 fighter jets. Additionally, the government plans to proceed with ordering five sets of Patriot air defense systems but is considering adding an extra set. According to a statement, this is due to the US prioritizing deliveries to Ukraine, causing a 4 to 5-year delay in Patriot orders.
