On March 3rd, local time, a landslide occurred in the Gaseke mining area in the Masisi region of North Kivu Province in eastern Congo, burying hundreds of people. Local rescue workers estimate that the death toll exceeds 200 people, with the exact number of casualties still being counted. Currently, the mining area is occupied by the anti-government armed group M23. Due to fears of airstrikes by the Congolese government army, M23 did not carry out modern mechanized mining after controlling the mining area, and local residents earned income by manually extracting ore. There was no rainfall in the mining area on the day of the landslide. Around 3:30 p.m. that day, the landslide occurred in the mining area, burying hundreds of people. In addition to the miners, there were also nearby vendors selling drinks, food, and tools among the buried. The number of casualties is still being counted.
