The situation between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense regarding the military's request for unrestricted use of the artificial intelligence company's technology has reached a stalemate. As the compliance deadline set by the Pentagon for Anthropic approaches on Friday afternoon, over 300 Google employees and over 60 OpenAI employees have signed an open letter urging their respective company leadership to support Anthropic and reject this unilateral usage request. Specifically, Anthropic opposes the use of artificial intelligence for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. The signatories of the open letter hope to encourage their employers to "set aside differences and stand united" in upholding the boundaries set by Anthropic. The letter states, "They are trying to divide each company with fear of 'the other side will compromise.' This strategy only works when we do not understand each other's positions." The letter specifically calls on executives at Google and OpenAI to uphold the red lines set by Anthropic regarding mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. "We hope that the leadership can set aside differences, stand united, and continue to reject the current demands of the Department of Defense." The leadership of both companies have not yet officially responded to this letter.
