On the evening of February 26th, local time, intense clashes broke out between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the border areas of the two countries. Pakistan claimed to have killed 36 Afghan armed militants, while Afghanistan claimed to have killed 55 Pakistani soldiers. In the early hours of the 27th, Pakistan launched airstrikes and the conflict is still ongoing. Afghan government spokesperson Mujahid wrote on social media on the evening of the 26th that, in response to provocations from the Pakistani military, Afghan forces attacked Pakistani military facilities in the border areas. By 10 pm that evening, Afghan forces had captured 15 Pakistani military outposts. The Afghan Ministry of Defense announced late on the 26th that Afghan forces had killed 55 Pakistani soldiers in military operations in the border areas of the two countries. The Pakistan Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a statement on the 26th, stating that Afghan forces had "misjudged the situation" and "unjustly" shelled several locations in the border areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan. Pakistani forces immediately retaliated effectively, hitting Afghan armed militants at multiple locations. Initial reports indicate heavy casualties on the Afghan side, with multiple outposts and equipment destroyed.
