Lithium batteries are widely used in high-tech industries and our daily lives, and their performance directly relates to energy utilization efficiency and user experience. Recently, a team composed of researchers from Nankai University and Shanghai Institute of Space Power Research has made a groundbreaking discovery. Through a new electrolyte technology, it is expected that existing lithium batteries will achieve a multiple increase in endurance in the same size and weight, and significantly enhance low-temperature performance. This achievement was published in the international academic journal "Nature" early on the 26th. The core breakthrough of the new battery lies in the internal electrolyte, which serves as a "highway" for ion conduction in the battery, similar to a connection between positive and negative electrodes, and is critical for energy efficiency, operational stability, and temperature adaptability of the battery. Currently, the solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes typically contains an important element - oxygen. Its advantage lies in its strong solubility of lithium salts, but this strong interaction also limits the transfer of charges, resulting in difficulty in further increasing the energy density of batteries and limiting their low-temperature performance.
