Ministry of Commerce: China is willing to engage in candid discussions with the United States in the upcoming 6th round of Sino-US economic and trade negotiations.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce stated on the 24th that in response to recent tariff adjustments by the US, China is closely monitoring and will comprehensively assess the relevant measures taken by the US. China will decide on adjusting retaliatory measures against the US regarding the original fentanyl tariffs and equivalent tariffs in a timely manner according to the situation. China reserves the right to take all necessary measures to firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests. China is willing to engage in frank discussions with the US during the upcoming 6th round of China-US economic and trade consultations.
When asked about the decision by US Customs on February 24, 2026 to stop collecting tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and to impose import surcharges on all trading partners under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, the spokesperson said that China has taken note of the situation. The US previously imposed 10% fentanyl tariffs and 34% equivalent tariffs on Chinese goods in February and April 2025, with the 24% equivalent tariffs temporarily suspended and actual tariffs imposed on China at 20%. The US has stopped collecting the mentioned tariffs but has imposed a 10% import surcharge under section 122.
China is closely monitoring and will comprehensively assess the relevant actions of the US, and will decide on adjusting retaliatory measures against the original fentanyl tariffs and equivalent tariffs in a timely manner according to the situation. China reserves the right to take all necessary measures to firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests. The spokesperson emphasized that China consistently opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures and urges the US to cancel and cease imposing such measures. It has been proven through practice that cooperation between China and the US is mutually beneficial, while confrontation is harmful to both sides. China is willing to engage in frank discussions with the US during the upcoming 6th round of China-US economic and trade consultations. It is hoped that the US will work together with China to uphold the consensus reached at the summit meeting between the two countries' leaders and the call on February 4, resolving concerns through mutual respect, equal consultation, and managing differences effectively to maintain a healthy, stable, and sustainable development of the China-US economic and trade relationship.
