Cui Dongshu: The average price of passenger cars in January 2026 is 186,000 yuan, with an average increase of 15,000 yuan, and the market has clearly declined.
The Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Cui Dongshu, stated in a document that the average selling price of products in the passenger car market in 2026 has significantly increased, with the main factors influencing price changes being the changes in structure and sales volume. A decrease in sales volume leads to a continuous increase in the average price of cars in the market. In 2019, the average retail price of passenger cars was 151,000 yuan, steadily increasing to 183,000 yuan in 2023, before declining in the market. In 2024-2025, market sales volume has increased, with the average price of passenger cars being 184,000 yuan in 2024 and 170,000 yuan in 2025, a decrease of 14,000 yuan from the 2024 average price. In January 2026, the average price of passenger cars was 186,000 yuan, an increase of 15,000 yuan, indicating a significant market downturn. The prices of conventional fuel vehicles have continued to rise, leading to a noticeable contraction in the mid-to-low end of the market, while the contraction at the high end is slower. Therefore, the group of buyers of high-end fuel vehicles is gradually stabilizing, resulting in an increase in the average price of fuel vehicles. The average price of new energy vehicles has gradually decreased recently, from 184,000 yuan in 2023 to 180,000 yuan in 2024, and 160,000 yuan in 2025, with a significant price decrease. In January 2026, the average price is 195,000 yuan, with a decrease in quantity and an increase in price, reflecting the structural changes in the consumption of new energy vehicles. Consumer popularization is the most important trend in the future. Currently, with the withdrawal of the vehicle purchase tax exemption policy and the upgrading of the tax exemption technical indicators for new energy vehicles, some short-range and high-energy consumption models are facing pressure to be redesigned. The sharp contraction of A00-class electric vehicles in January led to an increase in the average price, with strong pressure on sales growth in 2026.
