A senior official at the Pentagon has revealed to the American news website Axios that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is "soon" to sever commercial ties with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, and designate the company as a "supply chain risk" - this means that any company wishing to do business with the U.S. military must cut off contact with the company. The senior official stated, "Cutting ties will be very troublesome, but we will make them pay the price for forcing us to take this step." The significance of this is that such punitive measures are usually only used against foreign hostile countries. Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell told Axios, "The U.S. 'war department's' relationship with Anthropic is under review. Our nation demands that partners be willing to help our warfighters win any battle. Ultimately, this is about the safety of our troops and the American people."
