On the 15th local time, Guatemalan President Arvalo announced the cancellation of the nationwide state of emergency starting from the 16th, and the implementation of a "preventive state" nationwide starting from the 17th. Arvalo stated that the government will continue to strengthen control over prisons, cut off communication channels for criminals, and carry out joint operations by the civil police and the military in Guatemala. The government will also maintain a precise strategy to combat organized crime. On January 18th local time, Arvalo made a national television address, declaring a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days due to a wave of gang violence. According to the law, the implementation of the "preventive state" does not require approval from Congress and can last up to 15 days.
