According to a senior official in the United States government, the Pentagon is considering terminating its partnership with the artificial intelligence company Anthropic because the company insists on setting restrictions on how the military can use its models. The Pentagon is urging four leading artificial intelligence labs to allow the military to use their tools for "any lawful purpose," including the most sensitive areas such as weapons development, intelligence gathering, and battlefield operations. However, Anthropic has not agreed to these terms, and after months of difficult negotiations, the Pentagon is becoming impatient. It is reported that Anthropic insists that there are still two areas off-limits: mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons. Informed officials reveal that "anything is possible," including scaling back or even completely ending the partnership with Anthropic. A spokesperson for Anthropic responded, stating that the company remains "committed to using cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to support U.S. national security."
