MetLife economist Tani Fukui pointed out in a report that US inflation has basically not been affected by tariffs. The January CPI was 2.4%, further approaching the Federal Reserve's 2% inflation target after a reading of 2.7% in December. "This is a very benign inflation report that supports our view that the transmission effect of tariffs this year will be minimal," Fukui said. She noted that "the price increases for most goods are moderate." Fukui maintains her forecast for three interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year "because we are much more concerned about the labor market than inflation."
