South African President Ramaphosa said on the 12th that the government's top priority this year is to intensify efforts to combat organized crime, gang violence, and illegal mining, and to deploy the military to support the police in carrying out related actions. Ramaphosa said in his State of the Nation address at the Cape Town City Hall that organized crime is the most urgent threat to South Africa's democracy, society, and economic development. South Africa will integrate its forces at the national level to combat organized crime, deploy the South African National Defense Force to support the police in fighting gang violence and illegal mining in the Western Cape and Hautin provinces. Ramaphosa said South Africa will also strengthen gun control laws and enforcement, promote criminal justice system reform, increase anti-corruption efforts, introduce whistleblower protection legislation, and add 5,500 police officers.
