Blogger @Wisdom Pikachu today posted a tweet on platform X, revealing that OpenAI's first hardware product is called Dime, a pair of earphones similar to Apple's AirPods. In terms of development strategy, sources revealed that OpenAI has shelved its previously rumored radical plan to build a revolutionary "phone-like" device with luxurious internal components, independent computing power, and material costs comparable to smartphones. OpenAI is currently leaning towards a "easier first, harder later" approach, prioritizing the development of a relatively simple and more traditional AI audio earphone. The core reason for this sudden change in strategy is the high cost of hardware. Reports indicate that there is a shortage of storage chips, causing component prices to soar, making it difficult to achieve reasonable commercial returns on building a "high computing power earphone". Based on the current supply chain environment, OpenAI has restructured its release schedule. The report shows that the base version of the AI earphone codenamed Dime is expected to be released in 2026. The company plans to establish a foothold in the hardware field with this lower barrier product first, accumulating user data and market feedback.
