Engel coefficient of Japanese households was 28.6%, reaching a high since 1981.
The results of the 2025 household income and expenditure survey announced by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on February 6 showed that due to the surge in food prices, the "Engel coefficient" which represents the proportion of food expenditure to total household consumption expenditure, reached a new high of 28.6% since 1981. Consumption expenditure showed an increase of 6.8% in "education" expenses, including a 6.7% increase in "transportation and communication" expenses, which includes costs related to cars. Due to the increased frequency of air conditioning use during the hot summer, expenses for "water, electricity, and gas" also increased by 2.5%. Due to the sharp rise in food prices, the trend of saving on food consumption has spread, with a decrease of 1.2% in food expenditure. Consumption of snacks as well as grains such as rice, bread, etc. has also decreased.
