The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday warned that it may once again ban WhatsApp, owned by Meta, from sharing data with other group entities, saying that the messaging app's privacy policy has misled users, two lawyers appearing in court said. WhatsApp has been embroiled in controversy with India's antitrust watchdog since November 2024, when the regulator fined the company $25.4 million and banned WhatsApp from sharing user data with other Meta entities for advertising purposes for five years. The appellate court later lifted the data sharing restriction but kept the fine, prompting both parties to approach the Supreme Court.
