A Chinese company has constructed and completed the first desert heavy-duty railway in Africa, which is now open for operation.

The first desert heavy-haul railway in Africa, the Western Railway Mining Line project in Algeria, was officially opened on February 1st. Algerian President Tebboune announced the official operation of the project at the inauguration ceremony held in Bechar Province. The railway mining line is 950 kilometers long, with China Railway Construction and local state-owned enterprises building 575 kilometers of it, making it the largest infrastructure project undertaken by a Chinese company in Algeria. The project will further improve the Algerian national railway network, promoting connectivity and economic development in the southwestern provinces of Algeria.
