Toyota Motor Corporation has maintained its position as the world's largest automaker for the sixth consecutive year, despite facing trade turbulence and increasing competition. Its record-breaking sales further widened the lead over Volkswagen Group. Data released by the company on Thursday shows that global sales for 2025 (including subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino) increased by 4.6% to reach 11.3 million vehicles. Production increased by 5.7% to reach 11.2 million vehicles. The data indicates that Toyota is still able to steadily move forward despite the trade war initiated by U.S. President Trump and the rise of other automakers. Global automakers have been warning that they are facing billions of dollars in losses due to tariff impacts and are responding by raising prices, shifting production to the U.S., or reducing output. In terms of electric vehicles, Toyota sold less than 200,000 pure electric vehicles last year, with only 4,227 delivered to customers in Japan. Pure electric vehicles have not yet become as popular in the Japanese market as they have in other major markets.
