Mainland reporters learned on the 26th local time that the Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority has launched an investigation into the headquarters of Chubu Electric Power Company regarding allegations of falsifying seismic design data for the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant. The Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant was shut down following the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake at the request of the Japanese government. In order to restart Units 3 and 4 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant after a review, Chubu Electric Power Company submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulation Authority between 2014 and 2015, requesting a review to determine if these units met the new regulatory standards. This review was a necessary condition for the restart of the nuclear power plant. In February of last year, the Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority initiated an investigation into the actions of Chubu Electric Power Company following an external report. Due to doubts about the basis for crucial decisions, the Regulatory Authority suspended the restart review since December of last year. On the 5th of this month, Chubu Electric Power Company held a press conference admitting that the seismic maximum shaking assessment reported to the Nuclear Regulation Authority in 2019 was intentionally skewed in favor of the company, underestimating the likelihood of maximum seismic shaking that could occur.
