Tokyo Electric Power Company announced on January 22 the draft plan for the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant during the 2026 fiscal year. The company plans to discharge radioactive contaminated water a total of 8 times in the 2026 fiscal year. According to this draft plan, the estimated total discharge for the 8 times is about 62,400 tons, with a total volume of tritium of approximately 11 trillion becquerels. The first discharge plan for the 2026 fiscal year will take place in April. Despite strong criticism and opposition from the international community, the Japanese side unilaterally began discharging radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea in August 2023. By the end of the 17th discharge on December 22, 2025, the total amount of radioactive contaminated water discharged from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant had reached approximately 133,000 tons.
