Dutch International: Euro weakens, investors await Trump's speech in Davos.
The euro softened against the US dollar on Tuesday after hitting a three-week high, as investors await the speech of US President Trump later at the World Economic Forum in Davos, with tensions rising between the US and Europe. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on several European countries and is seeking to purchase Greenland. He is scheduled to speak at 1330 Greenwich Mean Time. Francesco Pesole of ING noted in a report that if the Davos forum can ease some of the geopolitical tensions, the euro could fall against the dollar, alleviating concerns among investors about selling off US assets. He stated that in the seasonal period of dollar strength, along with the market's expectations of an upcoming rate cut in the US, the euro against the dollar should trade below 1.17 dollars. The euro fell by 0.1% to 1.1710 dollars, after reaching a high of 1.1768 dollars on Tuesday.
