The New Zealand general election is scheduled to be held on November 7th, with Laxman seeking re-election.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced that a national election will be held on November 7 with the aim of accelerating economic growth as his campaign promise to seek re-election as Prime Minister. Luxon said on Wednesday in Christchurch, "Continuing the tradition of announcing the election date early in the year can give New Zealanders a clear idea. New Zealanders can also rest assured that the government will fulfill its duties throughout the year and implement our governance plan to improve people's livelihoods and outline the country's future." Luxon plans to dissolve Parliament on October 1. After a recent decline in poll ratings, Luxon's National Party is in a stalemate with the largest opposition party, the Labor Party, hoping for a sustained economic recovery in the next nine months to help boost their vote share. With a significant boost in business confidence and low interest rates, New Zealand's GDP grew by 1.1% year-on-year in the third quarter, and the economy is expected to continue to expand. However, the country's economy nearly stagnated last year, with unemployment reaching a five-year high and house prices dropping to the lowest level since mid-2023 after a yearly decline. These various issues have led to doubts about the National Party's claim of being "better at economic governance."
