Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng: No matter how the relationship between China and the United States evolves, the historical logic of mutual benefit when in cooperation and mutual harm when in conflict will not change.
According to the website of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, on January 15, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng delivered a keynote speech at the Chinese New Year Award dinner hosted by the US-China Business Council, emphasizing that the historical logic of mutual benefit when both sides are in agreement and mutual harm when they are at odds will not change regardless of how China-US relations evolve.
Xie Feng stated that in 2025, President Xi Jinping and President Trump had four phone calls, exchanged communications multiple times, and successfully met in Busan, South Korea, correcting the course of China-US relations and avoiding obstacles at critical moments. The journey of China-US relations from being overshadowed by dark clouds to turning the corner over the past year once again reminds us: dialogue is better than confrontation, cooperation is better than zero-sum game, stability is better than chaos. Whether it is a trade war, a technology war, or a battle over resources and geostrategy, they are all dead-end paths that harm both parties; cooperation between China and the US benefits the world, while confrontation between China and the US brings disaster to the world.
Xie Feng stressed that we approach the development of China-US relations with sincerity but based on principles. There is no room for compromise on vital issues related to safeguarding sovereignty, security, and development interests. Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory, as established by internationally legally binding documents such as the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and UN Resolution 2758. The One China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques are the only guidelines for China-US relations in handling the Taiwan issue. The biggest reality in the Taiwan Strait is that both sides belong to one China, and the greatest threat to peace in the Taiwan Strait comes from the separatist activities of "Taiwan independence" and the indulgence and support of external forces. Once again, we urge the US to adhere to the One China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques through concrete actions.
Xie Feng stated that President Xi Jinping has proposed the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, which are the fundamental principles for China and the US to coexist harmoniously in the new era. Mutual respect is the premise, peaceful coexistence is the bottom line, and win-win cooperation is the goal. It is hoped that the US and China will move towards each other, implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state at the Busan meeting through concrete actions, expand the cooperation agenda, remove obstacles, and promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations.
